Wonder if this is a perverse marking move to sell the next generation of Equipment and Service contracts. The FUD Factor.
Sad, to say it could spell the end of little ISP with the service disruptions and render the internet almost useless. They should get the Tort Lawyers on to this and go after Cicso and use the product liabilty laws and other theories of law to Declare their products like DIOXIN/Mercury an unreasonable hazard to internet health and the economy of the US.
Sad becuase if they were to look at history and hacking the results are just logical. Cicso could have proactively taken care of this in a reasonable business manner and come up like a hero. Posting a vauge notice on their site in my book fails to give one reasonable notice of the gravity of the problem. Tort law is all about notice of the dangers.
The next question, while preseravtion of intellectual property is important, could Cisco's action's be considered criminal/conspiratorial and may even fall as a violation of national security policy and fall under the Patriot Act. You cannot use the cover of intellectual property to hide a crime.
The neat thing is there now is no practicle way to defend the internet and relaibilty of transmission of data from one end point to the other.
Cest la vie to the the internet as we have known it.
