At absolute worse the guy was being harmless without permission and he quit rather than keep working for an evidently clueless (distributed.net's client isn't the least interested in your sensitive data, MS should have been a bigger concern) and anal management. At best he was putting some wasted electricity to good use. In any case, it looks to me like he resigned rather than put up with people trying to stifle his enthusiasm and management decided to get at him the only way they could. I guess he should have realized, you can't quit just because your leash is too short.
