When Washington Mimics Sci Fi
George Smith, 2002-11-25

John Poindexter's evil design for an all-seeing God Machine seems torn from the pages of visionary science fiction, where such schemes rarely end well.

Mr. Smith,

Given your position in the media, I am not sure with whom I should be more disappointed...you, or SecurityFocus for foisting your diatribes on it's readers.

This massive database you're so paranoid about is neither "owned" nor "designed" by John Poindexter. Anyone who has had any experience with the military or federal government knows that Poindexter is simply a figurehead...someone's (perhaps misguided) idea of credibility for the project. There should be no doubt in anyone's mind that the most Poindexter does is get updates on the status of this database...he has layers and layers between himself and the actual system programmers.

Your ploy is obvious, sir. While I and everyone else can easily see how such a system can be misused/mismanaged, particularly by the federal government, your efforts to sully the project in the public eye by tying it directly to Poindexter are transparent. Yes, Poindexter was convicted of certain acts. However, I have yet to read a single article that then states that he was acquitted on appeal in '90. How convenient that other authors forget the "facts"...particularly those that do not directly support their arguement.

You might be fooling the masses, and developing a following...but be careful what you wish for. Only those incapable of thinking for themselves will be following you...is that what you want? The fact remains that although Poindexter is publicly the titular "head" of this project, he really has very little, if any, input into it's design or implementation. In fact, he doesn't even bother himself with signing off on purchase orders in support of the project. His only function is to serve as the public face of the project, and to be responsible to the President for the project. Other than that, he really has nothing to do with it. We know that...so why don't you?
